How to Obtain IAPP Certification
Exam Overview
In order to obtain an IAPP Certification (CIPM, CIPP/E, CIPP/US, CIPT), you must pass the certification exam.
The exam has 90 problems in total and 75 of them will be scored, while the remaining 15 questions will not be counted toward the score (questions for exam development purposes).
All questions are multiple choice questions where you select one or more correct answers. Approximately half of the problems involve reading a scenario and answering the question.
Exam scores are evaluated on a 100-500 point scale, with 300 points or above as the passing standard.

Certification Renewal
Requirements for IAPP Certification Renewal
Certification Validity Period
- Validity Period: IAPP certifications are valid valid for 2 years from the day after passing the exam
Recertification Requirements
To maintain IAPP certification, the following requirements must be met within the 2-year validity period:
- Payment of Maintenance Fees
- IAPP members: Maintenance fees are included as a member benefit as long as membership is maintained
- Non-IAPP members: Must pay 250 USD per certification period
- Acquisition of Continued Education Credits
- Earn 20 units of continued education credits corresponding to your certificate’s Body of Knowledge (BoK) content and submit evidence thereof
About Certification Suspension
- If the requirements above are not met, the certification will be suspended
- Until the certification is reinstated, you cannot identify yourself as an IAPP certified professional
